SGC Members Take Top Awards
at WRGF Flower Show

This year, the SGC did not present its own Flower Show.  Instead, we participated in the Flower Show, An Experience to Remember, presented by White Rock Garden Forum (“WRGF”).  SGC is a member of WRGF, a group made up of 10 different garden clubs.  SGC members won the top two awards in the Design Section and two of the top awards in the Horticulture Section.  SGC had 82 of the 132 awards in the Horticulture Division.  We had greater than 50% participation by SGC members, so this Flower Show will count for SGC (when we add up points to keep our Gold Club rating).  I don’t know if anyone kept count, but I’ll bet that our club had more entries (in all the classes) than any other club.

The Design Division had two categories:

I. Pot-et-fleur designs - three separate classes.  Our Carole Duckworth won first prize in her class (Far East), and the overall best of all the Pot-et-fleur designs (Designer’s Choice Award).

II. Table Artistry designs had two classes –

            (A)  capsule tables - small 19 ½ inch round tables with two different subclasses:  children’s birthday and holiday.  Patsy Knight won second place and D’Ann Robinson won honorable mention in the children’s birthday subclass.  Rachel Doyle won honorable mention in the holiday subclass.

            (B) functional table for two set up on a card table with an “Anniversary” theme.  Rachel Doyle won first place in this subclass and the overall best of all Table Artistry designs.

The Horticulture Division had nearly a dozen categories.  One category (roses) had no entries, and some had dozens of entries (lots of daffodils).  Janet Nevil won the Arboreal Excellence Award for her variegated Acuba japonica.  Madalyn Hernandez won the Grower’s Choice Award for her orchid plant.  I don’t think I’ll ever understand how the awards are done in the Horticulture Division, but Janet counted that SGC entries had 82 of the 132 awards – with several first place awards, along with the second place and honorable mentions.

Mary Ann Moreland and Janet Nevil were in charge of the Horticulture Division, and Madalyn Hernandez and Rachel Doyle were helpers.  It’s amazing to see how these hundreds of cuttings, clippings and pots are organized, labeled and end up in the right place for judging!  These ladies know what they are doing!  (well, except for me, of course)

Gail Wilson was in charge of the Design Division – organizing all the pot-et-fleurs and tables.  She also had her pretty and educational exhibit about Butterfly Gardens.

Patsy Knight did a great job, again, as our photographer.  I don’t think WRGF had anyone there to take photos – so we are so glad that Patsy could take the photos of the entries and the folks who were there.  Check out the photos section of our website to see some of the award-winning entries.

Thanks, y’all for all your work in making Sunnyvale Garden Club look good at the WRGF Flower show.

50 GOLDEN YEARS Details

We have exciting plans for celebrating our 50th Anniversary of the Sunnyvale Garden Club.

We will host a reception on Sunday Afternoon, April 18th, from 2:00 to 4:00 at Sunnyvale Town Hall at 127 Collins Road.  This reception is open to the public and free of charge.  (This reception will replace our regular meeting for April.)

We will have a harpist to play background music while you enjoy refreshments and review 50 years of scrapbooks and old photos and visit with former and current members.  We have invited charter members and former Presidents and other former members to attend.  We will have special treats for everyone who attends the reception.  Yes, husbands, children, friends are encouraged to attend this event!  It is not just for members only.

On Saturday, April 17th,  we will have a Floral Design Seminar and workshop  where we will create floral arrangements to be displayed at the Reception on Sunday.

We will take advantage of the highly skilled talent we have in our SGC – our own Flower Show judges will teach us how to create beautiful floral designs.  This is a wonderful learning opportunity for everyone.

The Club will provide the flowers, containers and necessary supplies.  You will need to bring clippers, scissors and paper towels.

Two people will work on one floral arrangement.  You must sign up by March 31st to reserve a spot in the Workshop.  If 30 people sign up, then we will make 15 arrangements.  It is necessary for you to sign up with Janet Nevil by March 31st so we will know how many flowers and containers to purchase.  We will also create corsages (for charter members and former Presidents).  Please indicate to Janet if you prefer to work on corsages.

On Sunday – the names of all members who are present for the reception will be put in a bowl.  We will draw from these names – and the winners will take home the floral designs.
